5 COLOMBIAN PLAYERS TO WATCH OUT FOR | NEWS

5 Colombian players to watch out for: Colombia begin their World Cup 2018 journey on the 19th of June and after last year’s impressive outing, La Tricolors will certainly fancy their chances of advancing further into the World tournament. For that to happen the Colombians have to outwit the likes of Spain, Germany, Belgium, Brazil etcetera. They’ve got some quality footballers in their ranks but for them to overhaul sturdy units and make this tournament theirs, the defence, the attack and the midfield have to work in tandem. Here we look at 5 Colombian players to watch out for, for the FIFA World Cup 2018. Do the Coffee Growers have it in them to go all the way? Well, let us take a look at their game changers.

5 COLOMBIAN PLAYERS TO WATCH OUT FOR

1. RADAMEL FALCAO(MONACO)

An inspiring captain, a world-class striker and by far their most influential match winner, Radamel Falcao will be starting the Colombian relay. Falcao is Colombia’s most prominent goal scorer. He’s scored 29 times for his country and will certainly look to add on to that number. In the qualifiers, Falcao only scored twice but it’s his presence out in the front that gives Colombia that ever so necessary oomph. For Colombia to advance through, Falcao needs to get his shooting boots on and as far as his reputation goes in big games, that’s a no-brainer.

For Monaco, 2017/18 season – Matches: 24, Goals: 18, Assists: 3

2. JAMES RODRIGUEZ(REAL MADRID/BAYERN MUNICH)

Colombia for the very first time in their footballing history played the quarter-finals in the previous edition. They beat Uruguay 2-0 in the round of 16 and one man who was a constant threat throughout was the eventual golden boot winner, James Rodriguez. His performance in the 2014 World Cup earned him a Real Madrid contract and ever since he’s been a global star. In the qualifiers, the left-footed magician scored 6 times for Colombia, assuring them a spot in the 21st edition of the World Cup. A dextrous left-foot and creative thinking make him a player to watch out for. Can he lead them to a World title?

For Bayern Munich, 2017/18 – Matches: 23, Goals: 7, Assists: 11.

3. DAVID OSPINA(ARSENAL)

Colombia’s shot-stopper was instrumental in the previous edition of the football World Cup. His outing earned him a contract at Arsenal football club and since then he’s been their first choice keeper. Ospina was added to the Colombian squad in 2007, making him the second youngest goalkeeper to play for his country. In the World Cup qualifiers, Ospina held a firm rearguard. Out of the 18 games played, Rodriguez managed 7 clean sheets. If Ospina displays his A-game, Colombia won’t be conceding many. He’s a key figure in the Colombian legion and will be a player to watch out for.

For Arsenal, 2017/18 – Matches: 21, Goals Conceded: 20, Clean sheets: 9

4. YERRY MINA(BARCELONA)

“Attack wins you matches, defence wins you titles” – Sir Alex Ferguson. In a World tournament where teams are circumspect, defence becomes all the more important. Colombia have a potent attack but do they have a stern defence? They have Davinson Sanchez and Yerry Mina who’ll warden their defence. Both centre-backs are extremely clinical when it comes to evading off attackers, Mina specifically. Yerry Mina was acquired by Barcelona in the December transfer market and his experience in the Catalan club is certain to benefit his nation. Mina not only is a powerfully built defender, but he can also chip in with crucial goals.

5. JUAN CUADRADO(JUVENTUS)

Cuadrado will start on the right wing for Colombia and he’s at his attacking best at that position. The midfielder was mighty effective in the previous edition. In the 21st version, with all the experience he’s gained at the big clubs, Cuadrado will play a more matured role. He’s got the skills & pace to topple defences and a thunderous right foot. How will Colombia use his services? If Cuadrado, Falcao & James get going, goals are almost a certainty.

For Juventus, 2017/18 season – Matches: 35, Goals: 5, Assists: 7
