Chennai Super Kings | IPL Auctions 2019 | FanFight Report

Chennai Super Kings: “They all looked at the man with the hammer”. No, it wasn’t Thor from a Marvel movie. This was Hugh Edmeades starting the IPL 2020 auction. 338 players were all set to audition to get acquired by a franchise & only 62 made the final cut. Let’s look at how the teams splurged money on these mere mortals. First up, the Chennai Super Kings.

The 3-time champions walked into the IPL 2020 auctions with a purse balance of 14.6 Crores & a maximum of 5 slots to be filled. CSK have always managed to retain the core & that has been the major reason for their success in the Indian Premier League.

CSK were poised for the majority of the auction & they knew exactly which player to look for. The name Piyush Chawla was up on the screen. The Chennai bench wasn’t animated from the offset but joined the bid after the Mumbai Indians backed out at 1.4 Cr. The Kings XI were at their opulent best & they exchanged bids with the Kings from the south. At 6.75 Crores, the auctioneer slammed the table & Chawla was acquired by CSK. Chawla will now play for his 3rd IPL franchise. His previous two – KXIP & KKR.

FACT: Chawla has played 157 IPL games so far & has picked 150 wickets. He’s 4th on the list of highest wicket-takers in the IPL.

Sam Curran has been a popular name in the domestic circuit over the last 18-20 months & CSK, also, were looking for a replacement for Dwayne Bravo. Curran had a decent outing last year with the KXIP & he’s expected to contribute with both bat & ball this time around as well. CSK purchased him for Rs. 5.5 Crores & with him in the squad, they now have all options nicely covered. Can he work his magic on the slow Chennai turf? Only IPL 2020 will tell. For now, “Sam Curran ke Whistle Podu”.

Josh Hazlewood & R Sai Kishore were both acquired at base prices. Hazlewood hasn’t played T20 cricket since 2016 but Chennai just couldn’t ignore his quality. R Sai Kishore had a fabulous outing in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy this year. The left-arm orthodox picked 20 wickets in 12 games & conceded only 4.63 runs/over.

Total amount spent by CSK in the IPL 2020 auctions – Rs. 14.45 crores.

CSK squad: Narayan Jagadeesan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, KM Asif, Ravindra Jadeja, M Vijay, MS Dhoni (c), Josh Hazlewood, Kedar Jadhav, Harbhajan Singh, Karn Sharma, Piyush Chawla, Ambati Rayudu, Suresh Raina, Imran Tahir, Deepak Chahar, Faf du Plessis, Shardul Thakur, Mitchell Santner, Dwayne Bravo, Lungi Ngidi, Sam Curran, Monu Kumar, Shane Watson, Sai Kishore
