England vs Sri Lanka | World Cup 2019 | Match 27 | FanFight Fantasy Cricket Preview | Timid Lankans Take on Destructive England

England vs Sri Lanka: The English batsmen are making this a habit. Scoring mammoth scores has become the norm. In the year 2019, they’ve played 16 ODI games & have scored 300+ a staggering 10 times. Their highest this year – 418 versus the West Indies. England have got just the right mix or caution & aggression. While you have the likes of Jonny Bairstow & Jason Roy at the top, Joe Root & Eoin Morgan at number 3 & 4 anchor the innings to a nicety. Anchor, did I say? Against Afghanistan, in the previous game, Morgan went absolutely berserk. He was batting on 26 off 24 deliveries. Since then, Afghanistan faced Morgan’s wrath. The English skipper scored 122 off his next 47 deliveries. England went on to score 397/6 their highest score in world cup cricket & won the game comfortably by 150 runs.

Sri Lanka have managed only 4 points after 5 games. Two of them were off abandoned games. Their highest run-getter in the tournament is their contentious skipper Dimuth Karunaratne. Kusal Perera has been the bright light but barring the two openers, the other batsmen have proven to be absolutely obsolete. Karunaratne & Perera have scored 179 & 159 runs respectively. It’s the other batsmen that have failed miserably for Sri Lanka. Angelo Matthews has been the biggest disappointment. The experienced campaigner has scored only 9 runs so far with scores of 0,0,9. For Sri Lanka to test the English might, the middle order has to contribute significantly.

Batsman Runs Average
1 Lahiru Thirimanne  45 15
2 Thisara Perera 36 12
3 Kusal Mendis 32 10.66
4 Dhananjaya De Silva 20 10
5 Angelo Matthews 9 3

WHERE DO THE TEAMS FEATURE ON THE POINTS TABLE

England have played 5, won 4 & lost 1. They’re placed 3rd on the table with 8 points.

The Lankans are placed 6th on the points table. They’ve won 1, lost 2 & have earned one point each from the abandoned games.

Since the last World Cup, the teams have met 10 times. England winning 6 of those & Sri Lanka managing only 1. England are the clear favourites this year but can the Lankans put up a sturdy performance?

TEAM NEWS

Mark Wood bowls over 90 mph & his bowling action takes plenty of toll on his body. With much more intense games lined-up for England, he’s likely to be rested. Liam Plunkett will be his replacement.

Lahiru Thirimanne has looked out of sorts. Well, Lanka’s entire middle order has looked timid, but Thirimanne is expected to be left out. Avishka Fernando will fill in the number 3 slot.

EXPECTED PLAYING XI

ENGLAND

James Vince, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan(c), Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler(wk), Chris Woakes, Mark Wood/Liam Plunkett, Jofra Archer, Moeen Ali, Adil Rashid

SRI LANKA

Dimuth Karunaratne(c), Kusal Perera(wk), Avishka Fernando/Lahiru Thirimanne, Kusal Mendis, Angelo Mathews, Dhananjaya de Silva, Thisara Perera, Milinda Siriwardana, Isuru Udana, Lasith Malinga, Nuwan Pradeep

PLAYERS TO WATCH OUT FOR

The English top-order have been in tremendous form. Joe Root has been scoring runs for fun. The stylish right-handed batsman has scored 367 runs in the ongoing World Cup & has been the backbone of England’s batting. Eoin Morgan is probably the best number 4 in world cricket at the moment. His onslaught against Afghanistan showed how destructive the English captain can be. He’ll be up against the quality of Lasith Malinga & Nuwan Pradeep but considering their current run Roor & Morgan will be difficult to contain

From the Lankan corner, Lasith Malinga will the man to watch out for. Against England, Malinga has picked 44 wickets in 29 games. His 2nd best effort as far as wickets against a nation is concerned. In World Cup cricket the slingy pacer has picked 47 scalps in 25 games. Sri Lanka’s top order hasn’t contributed vitally & it’ll boil down to the bowlers to restrict the English.
