TEAM OF THE WEEK: The FIFA World Cup always brings with it a lot of excitement, drama, inspiring stories and most important of all, some splendid football. The 21st edition of the World tournament hasn’t let the viewers down one bit. The passion with which the smaller teams walk in to compete against the giants of the game can only be marvelled at. It’s already been a week since the quest for the World trophy started and it’s only going to get intense. Russia and Uruguay have already made it to the playoffs, while Egypt and Saudi Arabia have to fly back home. Who were the top performers? Let’s take a look at the ‘FIFA World Cup 2018 Team of the Week’.
FIFA WORLD CUP 2018 TEAM OF THE WEEK
The Nordic Island country qualified for their first ever World Cup and they had the Argentine might to contain. What do you do when you have the likes of Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero tearing down defences? Hannesthor Halldorsson had the best possible answer. The Nordic goalkeeper had a dream debut and so did the entire country. Halldorsson couldn’t parry away Aguero’s strike, but Messi’s penalty kick was dismissed with aplomb. If Iceland qualify for the playoffs, they’ll certainly know whom to thank.

Ever since his move to Roma, Kolarov seems to have hit prime form. The Serb played 34 games for the Italian giants, scored 2 and created 8 goals. Serbia faced Costa Rica in their World Cup opener and needed a win to challenge the likes of Switzerland and Brazil. Kolarov after winning a free-kick readied himself and put that piledriver of a left foot across the ball. Serbia 1-0. The Serbs went on to win that game and with two important games to go, Kolarov would like to continue his fine run.

The Leicester City defender had a brilliant Premier League season and he’s carried his fine form to the World Cup as well. Against Tunisia, Maguire showed strength, technique and a lot of composure. England won the game in stoppage time thanks to a Harry Kane header. Harry Maguire was instrumental in creating that chance and he walks into our 6-man team of the week. Gareth Southgate’s selection for England’s rearguard worked to a nicety. Keeping out the likes of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling must have been a tough call. Maguire was picked and will be a certainty for the remaining games.

There are very few players in World football who make the game look ridiculously easy. Luka Modric is assuredly one of them. The Croatian playmaker is easily one of the best in the World and in the game against Nigeria, he’d upped his game a notch. He put the game to bed when he converted the penalty in the 71st minute against Nigeria and with sturdy challenges coming up, the onus will rest on Modric’s shoulders. The playmaker makes it to our team of the week.

Russia became the very first team to qualify for the knockouts as they swept away Saudi Arabia 5-0 in the tournament’s opener and beat Egypt 3-1 comfortably. Denis Cheryshev didn’t even make it to the starting eleven in the first game. Denis Cheryshev was introduced after Alan Dzageov suffered a hamstring pull. Then came the goals. 2 in the first game, including a smashing volley to beat the Saudi goalkeeper to his left and a clinical finish against Egypt. Russia have already scored as many goals as Spain had scored in their World Cup-winning campaign in 2010. Russia take on Uruguay to decide who leads Group A and are likely to face either Spain or Portugal in the round of 16. How far can Russia go?
On FanFight – Total points earned: 34, Goals: 3(second highest in the tournament)
He’s the best player in the World at the moment and the game against Spain was precisely explicable why he’s a big match player. Ronaldo scored his first World Cup hattrick and to produce that against Spain was a special effort. He’s announced his presence in fine fashion and that elusive 6th Ballon d’Or is undoubtedly around the corner. Portugal are a decent unit but are they good enough to win the title? The Portuguese can never be counted out as long as Cristiano is in their ranks. How many more can he score? He was the very first name in our WC Team of the week for week1.
On FanFight – Points earned: 38, Goals: 4, Pass Success: 94%
We’ll be coming up with our team of the week for all the 4 World Cup weeks. Would you feature the same list of players in your World Cup team of the week?
