FIFA WC 2018, GROUPS AND TEAMS: The biggest ever sporting extravaganza is back after 4 years. FIFA World Cup 2018 will be the 21st time teams will be competing for the coveted world title. Russia was awarded the hosting rights on December 2, 2010, and since then teams have battled, struggled and have come out victorious. 32 teams will be competing in this quadrennial tournament across 10 Russian venues. For the first time ever all the 209 countries were involved in the qualifying process. Which teams made it through to the World Cup finals? We list out the FIFA WC 2018 groups and teams for this magnificent tournament.

NEWBIES

Out of the 32 teams that have made it to the World Cup, 20 teams featured in the previous edition. FIFA World Cup 2018 will also see Iceland and Panama who have qualified for the very first time. It is also the first time that 3 Nordic countries(Denmark, Sweden and Iceland) and 4 Arabic countries(Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Morocco and Tunisia)have made the cut. Egypt return to World Cup action after a 28-year old gap, Morocco last competed in 1998. Peru and Senegal qualify for the World Cup after 36 and 16 years respectively. The stage is set for the world’s best footballers to compete for the mega prize. Who’s your favourite?

TEAMS THAT HAVE FAILED TO QUALIFY

The most notable countries that have failed to qualify are 4-time champions Italy and 3-time runners-up the Netherlands. Also, Cameroon – 2017 Africa Cup of Nations winners, Chile – two-time Copa American champions, New Zealand and the USA have failed to make it to the FIFA World Cup 2018. Ivory Coast and Ghana who’ve been regular participants don’t find a spot in the final 32.

SQUADS

Teams must first name their 35-member preliminary squad. From the 35, teams have to list their final 23 out of which 3 have to be goalkeepers. In case of injuries, teams are allowed to make changes until 24 hours before their first fixture. The replacement players can be chosen outside of the preliminary squad.

FIFA WC 2018 GROUPS AND TEAMS

32 teams across the globe will be battling it out for the World title. Russia acquired a direct entry because they are the hosting nation.

A total of 5 slots were available for the Confederation of African Football. Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Senegal and Nigeria have qualified from the African Continent.

From the Asian Section, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia and Iran have made it to the elite list.

14 teams make the cut from the European continent. The major misses being Italy and Netherlands being

The South American section was probably the most tightly contested. 5 teams from the continent have made through to the finals. Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Peru and Colombia will contest from this beautiful continent.

The North American section will not feature the USA for the first time in 22 years. The teams that go through from the CONMEBOL are Costa Rica, Panama and Mexico.
