IPL 2018 | 5 KEY PLAYERS FOR RAJASTHAN ROYALS

IPL 2018 | 5 KEY PLAYERS FOR RAJASTHAN ROYALS

Rajasthan Royals have had a topsy-turvy run in the Indian Premier League. The team won the first edition of the Indian Premier League under Shane Warne, but since then, they haven’t made it to the finals.

RR are known to unbury hidden talent from all the corners of the world. Their scouting has always been on point. This year though the Rajasthan Royals have let their wallets a tad bit loose but they’ve not let go of their legacy of unearthing some of the finest domestic talents.

The team had gone defunct for the years 2016 and 2017. The 11th edition though will be a huge changing point for the Rajasthan Royals as they envisage an advantageous season under the new team owners Manoj Badale and Lachlan Murdoch.

Let’s take a look at their history in the IPL over the last 10 years.

5 KEY PLAYERS FOR RR IN THE IPL 2018

1.Steve Smith

Very few in world cricket at the moment can play all formats with equal authority. Steve Smith is right up there with the very best. In the 5-day format, Smith is leaps and bounds about the rest. But, can he replicate the same form in this year’s IPL?  Well, stats more often than not reflect a clear picture of a player’s ability. Smith’s numbers in the IPL aren’t the best but the Australian skipper has enough potential to win games single-handedly for his team.

Smith in the IPL: Innings 62, Runs 1703, Average 37.02, Strike-rate 131.71

Did you know?

Steve Smith has played for 5 IPL sides. For Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2010, Kochi Tuskers Kerala in 2011, Pune Warriors in 2012, Rajasthan Royals in 2014 and Rising Pune Supergiant in 2016.

2. Ben Stokes

Sir Garfield Sobers, Kapil Dev, Sir Ian Botham, Imran Khan and Jacques Kallis are probably the greatest all-rounders to have played the game. It’s a little too early to list Ben Stokes in that elite company but boy he’s good. Stokes played a significant role in RPS’ road to the finals. He was also the costliest player in the auctions this year. A mammoth 12.5 crores were spent to acquire the dashing all-rounder. Stokes’ form in the IPL will determine how far they’ll go this year.

Did you know?

Only two players from England have scored a century in the IPL. Kevin Pietersen in 2012 and Ben Stokes in 2017. Both batsmen scored 103*.

3. Sanju Samson

At 23 years and 128 days, Sanju Samson is one of the most skilful batsmen in the Indian domestic circuit. He’s been in the reckoning for quite some time. Skill, elegance, power and speed; Samson has got it all to succeed at the highest level. He’d want to break all shackles and submit his arrival.

Did you know?

Sanju Samson has played one T20I for India. India played Zimbabwe on July 19th, 2015. Samson scored 19 off 24.

4. JAYDEV UNADKAT

Unadkat was bought in at Rs. 11,50,00,00 by the Rajasthan Royals. This after a stellar performance in last year’s IPL. Unadkat was 2nd on the list of the highest wicket-takers in 2017, only 2 behind the leader Bhuvaneshwar Kumar with 24 wickets. Unadkat’s domestic season this year didn’t hit the roof but the left-arm pacer has got all the tricks in his bag to outwit batsmen. Unadkat for certain is one of RR’s key players.

Did you know?

Only 2 bowlers have picked a 5-for twice in the IPL. Unadkat and James Faulkner. Unadkat’s 5/25 came against Delhi Daredevils and 5/30 against SunRisers Hyderabad.

5. AJINKYA RAHANE

In 111 IPL games, Ajinkya Rahane has stacked up 3057 runs at 33.59. His strike-rate has been a touch over 120 but that doesn’t reveal the many important knocks he’s played for RR. Ajinkya Rahane was retained via the right-to-match card for 4 crores. Rahane didn’t have the best test season and didn’t get as many opportunities as he’d like but the Mumbai born lad has the right temperament to score and score consistently. Watch out for Ajinkya Rahane!

Did you know?

Ajinkya Rahane is the only batsman to hit 6 fours in an over in T20 cricket. Sreenath Aravind was the bowler on that occasion.
