Indian World Cup Squad | World Cup 2019 | Rahul, DK in Pant & Rayudu Miss Out

Indian World Cup Squad: The squad for the much awaited World Cup has been announced. The final 15 for the coveted tournament have been named. KL Rahul & Dinesh Karthik will don the Indian jersey while Rishab Pant & Ambati Rayudu miss out narrowly.

The selection panel, led by chief selector MSK Prasad & Virat Kohli met at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai & listed down the squad who will be heading to the UK in late May. The Kohli-led team will now look to win the trophy for the 3rd time. Ambati Rayudu & Rishab Pant were the primary contenders to make it to the squad. Rayudu especially considering his consistent inclusion in the Indian team for the majority of the games. The stylish Hyderabadi batsman, since January 1st 2017 played 21 games & scored 639 runs at 42.60.

The number 4 spot wasn’t always the reason for concern. Rayudu was a unanimous pick until the West Indies tour of India. Rayudu wasn’t at his best in Australia but in New Zealand, the right-hander displayed a lot of class. Why doesn’t Rayudu get to travel with the team? Have Dinesh Karthik & KL Rahul done better?

Let’s take a look at their numbers

KL Rahul has played only 4 ODIs since January 1st 2018. And MSK Prasad was very precise in his statement about not considering the IPL for player selection. Rahul has been a regular in the T20I format but to pick him in the World Cup squad 2019 on the basis of only 4 internationals just doesn’t seem right. The right-handed batsman must have been included in the squad as a reserve opener perhaps.

Ambati Rayudu at various batting positions
2nd 1 57 57
3rd 16 687 68.7
4th 24 750 41.66
5th 8 188 26.85

Dinesh Karthik at number 4 averages 38.72 & at number 5, he averages 37.00. DK’s experience in English conditions & as a back-up keeper must have paved way for his inclusion into the team. MS Dhoni is also a viable option at number 4 but this certainly is the biggest conundrum ever. The team has been announced and the starting XI looks extremely solid. Can India win their 3rd World Cup? Here’s the full Indian World Cup squad.
