Kolkata Knight Riders got the better of them on that occasion and since then, they’ve finished last, twice(2015 & 2016) and 5th last year. Can the team from Punjab win the title this year? The Kings XI spent a total of Rs. 79.9 crores out of the 80 crore budget. Ravichandran Ashwin was appointed the captain of the Kings XI and Brad Hodge will be the head coach for the year 2018.

5 KEY PLAYERS FOR KXIP

KL RAHUL

The extremely talented Karnataka batsman was acquired for a mammoth Rs. 11 crores by Kings XI. Rahul has been a major contributor in all formats for team India, but his form hasn’t been the best in the last 6 months. However, his ability with the bat should leave the owners of this franchise with no doubt that he’s a skilful purchase. In the IPL, Rahul has played 38 games and averages a mediocre 29.30. Although this may be true, Rahul has all the ability to win matches single-handedly and this might be his breakthrough IPL season.

KL Rahul is the only batsman to reach 100 with a boundary in all three formats of the game.

AXAR PATEL

The Kings XI retained Axar Patel after for Rs. 12.50 crores before the players’ auctions. The stability Patel provides in the 11 with both bat and ball was recognised by the franchise owners. Axar was named the Emerging player of the season in the year 2014, his debut season for the Kings XI Punjab. To emphasize, Axar will be an integral cog in the Kings XI unit and his display in the 11th edition will decide how Kings XI progress in the tournament.

Axar Patel won the BCCI U-19 cricketer of the year in 2014.

DAVID MILLER

“If it’s in the V, it’s in the tree; if it’s in the arc, it’s out of the park”. Sums up exactly how David Miller plays his cricket. The marauding left-handed batsman had a pale 2017 IPL but given his ability to tonk any delivery out of the ground, he’s always considered a strong addition. In the positive frame of things, Miller can be counted as one of the mightiest hitters in the game and that will play in the KXIP’s favour.

DID YOU KNOW?

David Miller has the record for scoring the 3rd fastest hundred in the IPL. His hundred against RCB back in 2013 came in 38 balls.

MARCUS STOINIS

Stoinis was retained in team Kings XI Punjab for Rs. 6.2 crores. It’s important to realise that the teams field their strongest starting eleven. Stoinis’ ability with both bat and ball make him a genuine match winner and if any team were given a chance to acquire him, they would accept the offer gleefully. The Australian all-rounder scored an impressive 146* against New Zealand, his first and only hundred in ODIs. It must be remembered that all sides in the IPL have improved significantly and if KXIP have to outwit the other teams, Marcus Stoinis has to up his game.

DID YOU KNOW?

Stoinis smashes six sixes in an over off Brendan Smith in a game featuring the National Performance squad and the National Indigenous squad. However, the game was a non-sanctioned game and Stoinis couldn’t make it to the record books.

ANDREW TYE

The Gujarat Lions were pummeled in the IPL last year and their only saving grace was Andrew Tye. Tye played only the last 6 games and finished with 12 wickets; including a 5 for. Tye, in the big bash league 2017/18 played only 6 games and picked 16 wickets; third on the list of the highest wicket-takers. Tye has got all the variations needed to trouble batsmen and in India, where subtlety in pace can prove to be a major weapon, Tye might just be the go-to man.

DID YOU KNOW?

Andrew Tye is only the 2nd bowler to pick 3 T20 hat-tricks and the first to take 3 hat-tricks in a calendar year. Tye also became the first bowler to take a hat-trick on debut. His 5/17 came against the Rising Pune Super Giant.
