The Mumbai Indians retained Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah for a total of 33 crores. It was almost certain they’d use the right-to-match for Krunal Pandya, but Kieron Pollard getting the nod for 5,40,00,000 was an unforeseen move. Will it prove to be a miscalculation or a masterstroke?

One of the most exciting talents in India, Ishan Kishan was acquired by Mumbai Indians for 6,20,00,000. The Jharkhand lad who played for the Gujarat Lions last year will now wear the blue MI jersey. He was Mumbai’s costliest purchase.

5 KEY PLAYERS FOR MUMBAI INDIANS – IPL 2018

Rohit Sharma

The Indian fans have gotten used to seeing Rohit Sharma smash the sheen off of the white kookaburra in the 50-over format. His average in the T20 format isn’t the sharpest but his ability to change games single-handedly makes him a 15 crores worth player. He’s probably one of the most dangerous players to bowl to once he gets his eye in. Sharma scored only 333 runs in the last edition at 23.78. An aggregate that didn’t please him or his fans. This year though, he’s a certainty at number 3 and he’ll be Mumbai Indians’ main-man

FACT

Rohit Sharma is third on the list of the highest run-getters in the IPL. 4207 runs in 159 matches at 32.61.

Jasprit Bumrah

Let’s go back to April 29th, 2017. A tied game between Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Lions. In the super over, Mumbai scored 11 runs. Bumrah was given the responsibility to defend the target. He didn’t start the over with conviction but what followed was an absolute masterclass. Yorkers hurled in at 140 kmph and slower deliveries which even the likes of Brendon McCullum and Aaron Finch couldn’t pick. He bowled a no-ball, a wide and still conceded only 5 runs. Bumrah is assuredly the best T20 bowler in the world at the moment and Mumbai spent only 7 crores to retain him. Now, that’s a massive bargain.

FACT

Bumrah has played 111 T20 games so far. His wickets tally is more than his runs aggregate. In 111 games Bumrah has scored 65 runs and has picked up 128 wickets.

Ishan Kishan

Mumbai acquired Ishan Kishan for a mere Rs. 6.2 crores. Why mere? Kishan had an impressive Vijay Hazare Trophy this year. In the 5 games he played, Kishan scored 313 runs at 78.25. His strike-rate, an impressive 105.03. Kishan is easily one of the most talented cricketers in India and his six hitting ability makes him a concrete inclusion in the Mumbai eleven. Kishan is likely to open the innings with Evin Lewis, another pure hitter of the cricket ball.

FACT

Ishan Kishan’s 273 against Delhi in the 2016-17 Ranji Trophy season is the highest score for Jharkhand.

Evin Lewis

Lewis has an outstanding record in T20Is against India. In the three T20Is he’s played against India, Lewis has scored 100, 7 & 125*. However, in his only inning in India against Afghanistan, Lewis didn’t trouble the scorers at all. Mumbai Indians acquired the powerful hitter for Rs. 3,80,00,000 and he’s likely to open the batting with Ishan Kishan.

FACT

Lewis became the third batsmen to score two T20 International hundreds. Chris Gayle, Brendon McCullum, Evin Lewis and Rohit Sharma are the only batsmen to score two T20 hundreds.

Mustafizur Rahman

In his debut IPL season(2016), Rahman picked 17 wickets in 16 games finishing 4th on the highest wicket-takers tally. SRH went on to win the IPL that year and Rahman was a major contributor. Last year, however, Rahman was plagued with an injury and was left out for the major part of the tournament. Rahman’s ability to bowl toe-crushing yorkers and fast off-cutters make him a vehement addition. Mumbai Indians bought the Bangladeshi pacer for Rs. 2,20,00,000. That’s an absolute steal. Bumrah and Rahman in the death overs.

FACT

Mustafizur Rahman is the first player to win the ‘Man of the Match’ award on both test and ODI debuts.
