5 REASONS WHY DD ARE STRUGGLING IN THE IPL: Delhi Daredevils have never won the Indian Premier League. Let that alone, they’ve never made it to the finals of the IPL. The league has provided players not only an opportunity to rub shoulders with the cricketing greats but also has churned out some of the finest talents. The franchises do take pride in scouting talent but they’d like to add the coveted title to their cabinet. After 6 games, DD find themselves in familiar territory. Not something they’d be proud of & things really haven’t worked for them as envisaged. Here, we discuss 5 reasons why DD are struggling in IPL 2018.
After the 2018 auctions, the DD think tank would have been content with the purchases they’d made. The fans must have taken a sigh of relief when the probable playing xi was listed. Rishab Pant, Chris Morris and Shreyas Iyer were retained while the likes of Kagiso Rabada and Mohammad Shami were retained. Come to think of it, the team looks finely balanced with the perfect blend of international stars and able domestic players. Where have Delhi faltered? Let’s dig deep.
THE INITIAL LINE-UP AFTER THE AUCTIONS
Gautam Gambhir(c), Colin Munro, Shreyas Iyer, Rishab Pant(wk), Glenn Maxwell, Chris Morris, Vijay Shankar, Shahbaz Nadeem, Amit Mishra, Kagiso Rabada/Trent Boult, Mohammad Shami.
Now, that’s no mediocre line-up. The team has no shortage of genuine match winners and in Gautam Gambhir, they had a captain who’s been there done that. Twice. The team was a definite contender to qualify for the playoffs but now find themselves tottering at the bottom of the table. Again.
5 REASONS WHY DD ARE STRUGGLING IN IPL 2018
1. OPENING CONUNDRUM
When you have the likes of Gautam Gambhir, Colin Munro and Jason Roy in your team, there’s very little a team has to ponder about. But this season, nothing has worked for Delhi. Their opening stands in the matches so far have been 12, 0, 50, 4, 7, 25. Also, with the kinds of starts DD have gotten off to, a change at the top was certain. 4 openers in 6 games. Sums up the situation for DD. The only game they’ve managed to take points off was when Roy and Gambhir put up a 50-run stand.
Gautam Gambhir has now stepped down as the DD captain. Iyer has been appointed the new leader. Can new ideas and a new approach change the fortunes for DD?
2. KAGISO RABADA’S INJURY
Delhi retained Kagiso Rabada for Rs. 4,20,00,000 at the player auctions. The World no.1 bowler in tests was ruled out of the IPL after suffering a back injury. Rabada played only 6 games last year and that stint was enough for the owners to persist with him. However, DD miss his services immensely. Albeit Trent Boult isn’t a bad option, Rabada’s injury has had a huge impact already.
3. AMIT MISHRA’S INCONSISTENCY
Amit Mishra with 134 wickets, is the 2nd highest wicket-taker in the IPL. The leg-spinner has been one of the most consistent performers over the years. He’s also the only bowler in the IPL to pick 3 hat-tricks. The numbers he’s managed to pile are a clear indication of the quality he provides. However, after their season opener against Kings XI where Mishra conceded 46 runs in 4 overs, he wasn’t picked for the next 4 matches. He did make it to the side in their last game but looked nowhere close to his optimum best. For DD to win games, Mishra has to verily play. Rahul Tewatia has been the find of the season for Delhi and if Mishra can combine with him, their 8 overs can help them turn games.
4. GAUTAM GAMBHIR’S BAD PATCH
Gautam Gambhir is an Indian great. There’re no second thoughts about that. He’s also been an excellent leader for KKR in the seasons he’s captained them and has always been on the list of top run-getters. He’s won two titles with KKR and when Delhi acquired him, a similar change of fate was predicted. Unfortunately for DD, the pugnacious left-hander hasn’t fired at all. In the 6 games he’s opened for Delhi, he’s managed scores of 55, 15, 8, 3, 4. The Southpaw is the 4th on the list of highest scorers and DD in such dire situations need their main man to put his hand up.
5. THE FINISHERS
Chris Morris and Glenn Maxwell can walk into any franchise and they’ll be the players to watch out for. The two dashers have all the ability in the world to torment the best bowling attacks. There are very few all-rounders if not none in the world who have the ability to bowl 150 kmph hurlers and smash the white cherry over 100m. Morris certainly has that ability and with Glenn Maxwell, he can form a fierce partnership. Maxwell and Morris have to step up and step up soon. Delhi have a slim chance to qualify for the playoffs and for that to happen, every possible combination has to work in their favour. Also, one move that might work for DD is to move Morris up the order.
Morris in the IPL 2018 – Matches played: 4, Runs: 46, Strike-rate: 176.92, Wickets: 3, Economy: 10.21
Maxwell in the IPL 2018 – Matches played: 5, Runs: 93, Strike-rate: 166.07, Average: 18.6
