IPL 2018 MATCH 2 | KXIP vs DD | FANFIGHT PREVIEW

IPL 2018 MATCH 2 | KXIP vs DD | FANFIGHT PREVIEW

There is one common stat that Kings XI Punjab and Delhi Daredevils would not want to be connected with for any longer – both teams have never won the IPL. Their track record is pretty similar too, and doesn’t make for good reading; Kings XI have made the playoffs just twice in ten seasons including an appearance in a final while Delhi Daredevils have never progressed to the finals, and have finished bottom of the table four times in the last seven editions. We break down KXIP vs DD and look at a few numbers.

Both Delhi and Punjab, now led by new captains, will be eager to get off to a good start in the tournament. The Daredevils last won an opening game in 2013 while Kings XI have just won their opening fixture four times.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

While Kings XI just edge out the Daredevils 11-9 in H2H encounters, it has been pretty much one sided at the IS Bindra Stadium having lost just once in five fixtures.

This game also sees the return of Yuvraj Singh and Gautam Gambhir to their home teams, after having represented them in the first 3 seasons. While Gambhir led Kolkata KnightRiders to 2 IPL titles, Yuvraj spent his time with Pune Warriors, Royal Challengers Bangalore and won the IPL with Sunrisers Hyderabad during his time away from Punjab.

TEAM NEWS

Kings XI Punjab will be without Aaron Finch for the first week of the IPL after the Australian opener got married on Saturday while Delhi Daredevils will be without the services of Glenn Maxwell, who was appointed to emcee the event of his longtime friend.

Delhi were also hard done with Kagiso Rabada being ruled out of the IPL due to an injury. However, they have a more than able leader of the attack in Trent Boult, who was recently awarded the New Zealand Cricketer of the Year. Maxwell’s absence will also free up the slot for Jason Roy to stake a claim for the fourth overseas player slot along with Colin Munro, Andrew Tye and Chris. The middle order slots will be taken by Rishabh Pant, who finished as the top scorer in the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and Shreyas Iyer.

 KARNATAKA TRIO

Punjab have the Karnataka trio of Mayank Agarwal, Karun Nair and KL Rahul, all of who could open the innings along with Chris Gayle while they will bank of Miller, Yuvraj and Stoinis to provide the muscle in the deep end of the innings. Punjab also have the option of fielding 17-year-old Mujeeb Zadran, who played a vital role in Afghanistan’s qualification for the 2019 World Cup

ANALYZING THE CAPTAINS

  • This fixture will see Ravichandran Ashwin captain his first T20 match. Known to be one of the smartest minds in the Indian dressing room, it will be interesting to see Ashwin at the helm of affairs as a full-time captain. No other player has played more matches before captaining a squad.
  • Ashwin has also had the better of his counterpart in their encounters so far having dismissed Gambhir twice in 47 balls and having conceded less than run per ball.
  • It is also interesting to note Gambhir, one of the better players of spin, has struggled against Axar Patel having scored only 36 runs in 42 balls faced.
  • Gautam Gambhir has 35 half centuries in the IPL, just 1 less than David Warner’s record.
  • However, Gambhir is yet to score a century in the IPL, and has the unwanted record of most runs by a player without scoring a century in the T20 format.
