IPL 2018 | MATCH 34 | KXIP vs MI | FANFIGHT PREVIEW

IPL 2018 | MATCH 34 | KXIP vs MI | FANFIGHT PREVIEW

KXIP vs MI: ” Champions are not the ones who always win races – champions are the ones who go out there and try harder every single time”. Mumbai Indians are in a similar kind of situation in this year’s IPL. The defending champions are in dire need of victories. They’ve registered only 4 points in 8 games and are delicately placed at the bottom of the table. MI are mathematically not out of the tournament yet. If they win all their remaining games, they still have a chance to make it to the playoffs. However, it’ll all boil down to the character they’ve been gifted with. KXIP vs MI is going to be one cracker of a game. Can MI go beyond the bounds of possibilities yet again?

A BITTER-SWEET START

KXIP would like to forget their last game against SRH. The Kings were absolutely cruising before they went head-on against the 2016 IPL champions. However, KXIP don’t have to worry about the points table. They’re placed comfortably at number 3 after 7 games and are certain to make it to the playoffs. Then again, the Punjabi unit have been excessively reliant on Chris Gayle and KL Rahul. The duo have pummeled every bowling unit and don’t seem to slow down. Gayle and Rahul have opened for KXIP 4 times in this year’s IPL and average a remarkable 80 for the 1st wicket. That’s how dominating they’ve been. Can they replicate their batting blitz against MI? If they do, MI will have plenty to chase/defend.

PITCH CONDITIONS

The pitch here tends to favour the batsmen. Short boundaries, quick outfield and even bounce make batting extremely comfortable. Win the toss here and bowl first. KXIP now switch their home base to Indore after a week’s rest.

Trivia: Virender Sehwag’s ODI double hundred against West Indies came on this ground. Sehwag scored 219 off just 149 deliveries.

TEAM NEWS

Evin Lewis missed the last game and is expected to stay out for this fixture as well. Mumbai’s middle order hasn’t flourished whatsoever and certainly needs tweaking.

For the Kings, their last game against SRH didn’t pan out aptly. However, the same combination has won them games. They’re likely to stick with the same eleven.

PLAYER BATTLE

RAVICHANDRAN ASHWIN vs ROHIT SHARMA

Ravichandran Ashwin has led KXIP with aplomb. The wily off-spinner has now added leg spin to his arsenal. Ashwin has always thrived on trying out variations and he’s mastered wrist spin to a nicety. He hasn’t been among the wickets this season but he’s kept a check on the run-rate. Ashwin in 7 games has maintained an economy of 8 which is reasonable. For his team to lift the IPL trophy aloft he’s got to work on the wickets column. He’ll be up against Rohit Sharma who’s an absolute monster when it comes to white ball cricket. The numbers, the Mumbai Indians skipper has garnered are majestic. Rohit is the 3rd highest run-getter in IPL with 4403 runs in 167 games. Rohit has had a mediocre IPL this year considering his high batting standards. 196 runs in 8 innings seem minute for the ability he owns.

DID YOU KNOW?

Chris Gayle is only 122 runs away from reaching 4,000 IPL runs. He’ll become the 6th batsmen to reach the coveted landmark. He’ll also be the quickest to reach there.

Ankit Rajpoot’s 5/14 are the best bowling figures for an uncapped player. Ajit Chandila 4/13, Srinath Aravind 4/14, Rajat Bhatia 4/15, Pawan Negi 4/18 and Mayank Markande 4/11 are some of the best bowling figures for uncapped players.

Ishan Kishan has scored 151 runs in 7 IPL innings this season. He’s got out for a duck in 3 out of those 7 innings.

WHO WILL WIN KXIP vs MI?

Mumbai Indians are cornered at the moment and need wins to stay alive in the competition. Kings XI haven’t played a game for a week now and that might just work in Mumbai’s favour. Also, the last game against SRH exposed KXIP’s frailties. MI have to open with Rohit Sharma if they need to put up massive scores or chase big targets. Sharma is their gun batsman and needs to face as many deliveries as possible. If he scores MI win. For KXIP vs MI, we predict a Mumbai win. What’s your take?
