MI vs KXIP: Mumbai Indians face Kings XI Punjab at the historic Wankhede Stadium. The last time they met here, Mumbai managed to win by just 3 runs. Defending 186, we saw a brilliant display with the bat from KL Rahul who scored a 60 ball 94, and with the ball, Jasprit Bumrah picked 3 wickets for just 15 runs especially when the rest of the bowlers went for a bounty.
Both teams now return after their respective wins against the Sunrisers Hyderabad. While the Kings from the North would be glad about the batting performance of KL Rahul in the last game, what they will be mindful about is the failure of middle order to step up, in both games against SRH and Chennai. They sit pretty currently at 3rd on the table. But we’ve seen similar starts from Punjab in the last season too, however, ended up choking badly when it actually mattered towards the second half of the season.
Mumbai Indians, on the other hand, are a team which take pride in their batting line-up. However, isn’t the case this season. Their highest scorer is Quinton De Kock who has managed to score just 133 runs of 5 games, of which 60 came of one single game. The next best is the skipper, Rohit Sharma who’s managed to score 118 runs at an average of 23.
What always bailed them out, were those finishes with the bat in the form of either Kieron Pollard or Hardik Pandya or both in all their 3 wins, against RCB, CSK and SRH.
With Alzarri Joseph joining the MI Paltan in rich style, the bowling line-up seems very strong with Bumrah and Behrendorff as the frontline seamers and with occasional help offered by Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard. The spin department looks rich with Rahul Chahar impressing everyone along with Krunal Pandya who can complement Rahul with his left arm orthodox spin.
While it was a match-winning performance from Alzarri Joseph defending a meagre 136, got to be mindful about the fact that West Indian quickie is just a game old in the IPL. The lad needs more time to prove his core mettle. Mumbai Indians have a rich history of picking prospective young talent.

Highest Score at the Wankhede: 235/1 by RCB vs MI

STAT ATTACK
- Khelega KL
KL Rahul has scored 217 runs this IPL from 6 games. We all know he is better than this.
However, his record against MI is terrific. He has amassed 386 runs in 9 innings at a very healthy average of 55.2.
Also has managed to score 71*, 94, 24, and 68 in the last four innings against MI.
- MI record, batting first.
Mumbai has won 6 of their last 8 games when they have batted first. However, dew is a key factor too. Would be interesting to see what Mumbai would do if they win the toss.
- Orange Cap contenders? Nah!
Astonishing to say the least. A team which always took pride in their batting attack, Mumbai Indians’ top scorer with the bat this season is Quinton De Kock and he has just scored 133 runs at an average of 24.
What’s even more astonishing is MI have no batsman featuring in the top 20 scorers of the tournament so far. Hell, yes!
- Purple Cap? Same Story!
Now this gets a little hilarious. Mumbai’s highest wicket-taker is Alzarri Joseph, featuring 11th on the Purple cap list.
Needless to mention, he has just played one game. Time for other MI bowlers to step up. Especially considering Lasith Malinga’s experience is missed.
