South Africa vs West Indies: After a power-packed opening week in the ICC world cup 2019, there have been a few surprises and few stellar performances which are making this world cup even more exciting. Leaving stellar performances aside, the biggest surprise that the world has seen was the dismal performance of South Africa. The team, who started off as a strong force in the tournament was subjected to a lot of criticism after losing three straight matches. They will now be facing a formidable West Indies in match 15 of the tournament.
AS IT STANDS…
One thing that every Proteas fan is upset about is the exclusion of star-bowler, Dale Steyn from the world cup squad. Steyn suffered a shoulder injury and was officially ruled out of the team for the remainder of the tournament. With this, the world might not see Steyn Gun again in the world cup. Another reason to worry is the fitness issue with yet another fast bowler, Lungi Ngidi. This has by far been the most difficult campaign for South Africa. With Ngidi still uncertain to make the cut for the game against the Windies, Du Plessis might look to play Beuran Hendricks in the match.
The West Indies, on the other hand, started their tournament on a great note, by decimating Pakistan in their first game. However, they suffered a defeat in the hands of defending champions Australia in the next game, in a closely fought match. They will look to redeem themselves with a win against South Africa and the lethal pace-army will have to fire to test a rather subdued African line-up.
It is an important game for South Africa as a win in this game will ensure that they are still in the contention to qualify for the quarter-finals. However, West Indies will certainly not make it easier for the Proteas to register their maiden win in this edition. Nonetheless, the match is going to be a cracker of a game with both the teams equally balanced to win the match.

Rain might play a spoil-sport tomorrow as The Hampshire Bowl will be covered with clouds, for the most part of the day. Showers are also expected around afternoon, but it remains to be seen if it would continue to shower, leading the game to get abandoned or will it be kind enough for the game to happen. Fast bowlers will once again be decisive in the game with the conditions being overcast.
The pitch at Southampton is a paradise for batsmen as it offers plenty of support with a flat-track. However, the bowlers will also be at the forefront with the overcast conditions expected during the game and can restrict the batsmen from going over the top.
South Africa have a lot to retrospect and make important changes in the team. The team needs to show improvement in both aspects of batting and bowling. A lot will depend on the openers to sustain the pace-attack and give the team a good start. The middle -order needs to be more consistent and reliable and provide the team with the necessary partnerships, leaving the game open for the lower-order hitters to slog and accelerate.
Comparatively, bowling looks a little better for the Proteas, and their performance against India definitely showed some signs of improvement. Rabada & Morris will be the key for the game.
Quinton De Kock(WK), Hashim Amla, Faf Du Plessis(C), Rassie van der Dussen, David Miller, Andile Phehlukwayo, Chris Morris, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada and Imran Tahir.
West Indies boasts one of the most explosive batting sides, with the likes of Chris Gayle, Andre Russel and Hetmyer. Evin Lewis, however, couldn’t make his mark in the initial set of games and could be replaced by Darren Bravo, who will be opening the innings with Shai Hope. Nicholas Pooran will play the anchor innings in the middle-order taking the team to a defendable total.
Though the Caribbeans have one of the best batting line-ups, it is their bowling which has been outstanding in this world cup. The Windies bowlers have decimated the opposition with absolute pace and bounce. Oshane Thomas, Andre Russel and Jason Holder will have the onus of giving the necessary breakthroughs for the team. The spin-attack hasn’t been so great with the conditions favouring the fast-bowlers more.
Chris Gayle, Shai Hope(WK), Darren Bravo, Nicholas Pooran, Shimron Hetmyer, Andre Russell, Jason Holder(C), Carlos Brathwaite, Ashley Nurse, Oshane Thomas and Sheldon Cottrell.
